In grades 4-6, students are still taught the three basic movement skills, with the addition and incorporating of school and other individual and team sports. Grade 4-6 physical education classes cover the Provincial Curriculum and the five strands associated with it. There is the possibility of grade 5 students to participate in Royals extracurricular volleyball and basketball in which they would compete against other schools. These games are based 100% on learning the skills of the game and not the final score.
Grade six students have the opportunity to join the Royals sports program playing in the Manitoba Catholic Schools Athletic Association (MCSAA) Developmental League for volleyball and basketball (and possibly soccer). Again, the key word is Developmental, in which the league focuses on learning the skills of the game. Wins and losses are not recorded, teams play a six game schedule plus a season ending tournament. Fair Play and equal playing time is modeled.
Students in grades 4-6 also participate in the MCSAA Knights of Columbus Track and Field Meet, held in early June at the University of Manitoba. In the near future I hope to initiate an Indoor Track and Field Program through Athletics Manitoba.
